Hello fellow journalism teachers!
Welcome back to the 2024-2025 school year. My name is Tucker Love, and I advise publications at Shawnee Mission South High School in Overland Park, Kansas. I am in my second and last year as president of JEMKC, and I am excited to kick off the school year with some opportunities for journalism teachers and advisers across the metro.
First thing — if you are no longer the journalism teacher at your school, please let me know so that I can update my emailing list. My apologies if you have already asked me to do this and I haven’t yet. If you know who the new teacher is, I would also greatly appreciate that information so we can reach out to them as an organization.
Membership
Please take a moment to complete this JEMKC Member Survey. We are seeking your feedback to help us plan some of our events for this school year.
Membership for the 2024-2025 school year can be completed through the JEMKC website. When you visit the membership page, click the “Join JEMKC” button to access the registration form. Please complete the registration form and indicate how you plan to pay for your membership. Membership questions can be sent to me, or to Megan Palmer, our treasurer. Membership fees have not changed this year, so make sure you look into joining early. The membership fee increases after October 1.
Events
Don’t skip the JEMKC Member Survey. It’s all about our events, so PLEASE provide your thoughts. It will help the board out immensely.
The board is planning to host a fall welcome back event sometime in October. The date will be determined based on member feedback. We are also planning the return of our winter brunch for Saturday, February 1, 2025! The brunch location and start time will be communicated at a later date; if you have any location suggestions, feel free to share.
JEMKC Contests will once again take place this spring. The contest & scholarship due date is Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The membership deadline to participate in contests is February 3, 2025.
Board updates
JEMKC Board elections will occur in the spring. If you have ever been interested in helping support journalism teachers and students in the Kansas City metro, consider running for the board. We will share more information on how to run for the board no later than February 1, at the JEMKC winter brunch.
Our current board is made up of the following members. Please reach out to any of us if you have any questions related to JEMKC, and we will do our best to help you out.
Mary Prichard, North Kansas City High School
Michelle Huss, Blue Valley High School
Megan Palmer, Park Hill South High School
Jessica Flowers, Lee’s Summit High School
Elaine McDonald, Lee’s Summit High School
Rachel Chushuk, Blue Valley Southwest High School
Jennifer Higgins, Liberty North High School
Thanks, and have a great start to the school year!
