JEMKC Welcome Back from President Tucker Love

Hello KC advisers!

Let me introduce myself — my name is Tucker Love and I am the new president for JEMKC, and the publications adviser at Shawnee Mission South High School in Overland Park. It is June, so I hope many of you are enjoying your summer break and this time to recharge. I wanted to take a moment to let you know about some plans JEMKC has for this coming school year.

Welcome Back brunch!

Many of you may remember that JEMKC used to host a winter brunch, but the COVID-19 pandemic stopped us from doing that the last few years. It’s been long enough that the board has decided a welcome back brunch would be a better use of our brunch time — let’s gather at the beginning of the year to connect, catch up and get ready for a new year.

The welcome back brunch will be at the North Kansas City Chicken N Pickle on Saturday, August 26th, from 10 a.m. to noon. If you want, you can choose to donate $10 toward brunch when you register your school for JEMKC later in the fall. Please RSVP for brunch by responding to this Google Form.

Awards change

We will be taking a page out of NSPA’s book and revamping how JEMKC’s awards are announced in the spring. Rather than meeting in person and having an awards ceremony, we will share the award winners for each category over the course of a week on our social media accounts, like how NSPA announces finalists for their individual awards.

This trial run for awards announcement may become our norm, depending on how it goes. Due to the JEA/NSPA spring national convention being held in Kansas City, we wanted to be mindful of teacher’s and student’s time and ability to be absent from school. With as busy as spring gets with sports, testing schedules, yearbook finalizing, etc., finding another time for the awards ceremony in April was difficult and May was not a viable option. If you don’t already, please go follow JEMKC’s social media accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and visit our website. They will be more active this coming year!

Summer programming, 2024

JEMKC is an organization for teachers. We want to support teachers in the metro as best we can. One way we can do that is through summer learning opportunities. Right now, we are looking ahead to the summer of 2024 to potentially plan some small teacher workshops. I am requesting your help — what do you need from a JEMKC workshop? What content would you like to engage with? Think about your answers to these questions and respond to our survey. This will help us plan content that local advisers want and need. Please let me know your thoughts through this form.

I’m looking forward to this coming year. If you have any questions, please reach out to me or one of the other JEMKC board members.
