August Update

Well, it definitely seems like there are more questions than answers right now...especially as it pertains to education and all things scholastic journalism.

Picture Days? Who knows.

In person classes? Who knows.

Virtual yearbooks? Who knows.

JEMKC can't answer any of those questions, but we do know a few things.

First...the most exciting! We are excited to announce two virtual adviser socials. What better than a way to network, celebrate and commiserate from the comfort of your own home?

Save the dates for September 2 and October 7 from 4-6 PM. More information will be provided to advisers in an email prior to the socials.

Next, make sure to complete your early bird registration by October 7 to receive a discount on membership. https://www.jemkc.org/membership

While you're renewing your membership, make sure to check the calendar. The JEMKC board has decided to move most events to a virtual format this year. The 2021 Awards Ceremony will be virtual, as we believe that is the safest decision for students and teachers at this time. We're keeping our fingers crossed for the winter brunch and stuffed french toast. More communication will follow, but stay updated by checking the events page. https://www.jemkc.org/events-1

Finally, JEMKC would like to promote an event featuring member and KSPA executive director, Eric Thomas. Eric and student journalists will be featured speakers as part of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation Disruptor series.

Each month the Kauffman Foundation hosts a “disrupter” for the Kauffman Disrupter Series. This month, the Foundation will host Eric Thomas, executive director of Kansas Scholastic Press Association. He and student journalists, Trina Paul and Rachel Pickett, will present on the landmark law passed in 1992 that allows Kansas students extraordinary freedom of expression rights, and share stories that are being told as a result of student journalists and how their stories shape our communities.

Julie Scheidegger, a former student journalist (Oak Park High School) and editorial manager for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation would like to extend the invitiation to attend this series to all JEMKC members. The meeting will take place August 19th at 10:00 am. If you would like information about attending, please contact her directly: jscheidegger@kauffman.org
